Hiring can be an absolute nightmare.
Applicants are usually only telling half the truth.
It takes enormous time and money to bring people on board.
After hiring dozens and dozens of people, I’ve uncovered a surefire method to bring in A-level talent.
First off, if you’re afraid to invest in your people.
If you’re afraid to hire people better than you.
And if you have any sort of ego.
Then stop…
Don’t even think about hiring.
You’ll bring on a team of B players who only say yes.
And that’s an expensive lesson.
with that being said.
Here’s my process:
Prepare a stress test that tests the capabilities of what you’d look for in a top-tier applicant.
If you don’t know what you are looking for or if you don’t understand the finer details of the position, then I wouldn’t hire for it yet.
If you don’t know it, you can’t possibly manage someone who excels at it.
Or build any sort of KPIs.
Open the floodgates for applicants.
I use the following in order of importance:
Referrals from other businesses, Social media, Hiring sites like LinkedIn/Indeed, etc.
Once applicants come in, screen for the top tier based on application questions
Send the stress test to the top-tier applicants.
50% will not do it at all, 10% will ask to be paid for it, and the rest will do it without question.
The ones who do it without questions are your A-level talent.
Schedule an interview with the A-players you found from the stress tests
During these interviews, I work through culture, ask specific questions about the stress test, and get a natural feel for their personality, ability to problem solve, critical thinking, and skill level
A good hiring process is vital to bring on A-level talent that will help you scale your business.
I hope this helps! Reply with any questions!
